Team Coaching

The challenges organisations face today are more complex than ever, and the pace of change continues to accelerate.

Forward-thinking businesses are shifting focus from just developing individual leaders to building stronger, more effective teams.

Team coaching is one of the fastest‑growing areas in leadership and organisational development. Still relatively new compared to individual executive coaching, it focuses on helping teams improve the way they think, work, and perform together

What Is 'Whole Human' Team Coaching?

In the Whole Team Systemic Coaching Model, we define the role of the team coach as:

“To support a team in learning about themselves and the systems in which they operate in order to implement change which benefits their internal and external stakeholders, their organisation, their individual and collective development - and the individuals and communities who their work affects.”

Whole Human Team Coaching is a flexible, systemic approach that can be adapted to your team’s needs:

  • Short, focused engagements — one or two sessions to spark new thinking, inspire collaboration, or address a specific challenge.

  • Longer-term assignments — working over several months to tackle bigger developmental objectives, embed new ways of working, and raise overall team performance.

Whether short or long-term, Whole Human Team Coaching blends reflection, dialogue, and practical action to help teams strengthen relationships, align with organisational priorities, and achieve sustainable high performance.

'Whole Team'  Coaching Involves...

What can Team Coaching help with?

  • A new team forms or when a new leader joins and the team needs to build trust, shared expectations and a strong foundation.

  • A team needs to define or refresh its purpose, strategy and value, ensuring everyone is aligned on what matters most.

  • External pressures intensify — such as market volatility, regulatory change, competitive threats or organisational restructuring.

  • Faster, more effective collaboration is essential and the team needs clearer decision-making, roles and ways of working.

  • Innovation and adaptability are required, especially in unpredictable or rapidly shifting environments.

  • The team needs to strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, improve influence or increase visibility and organisational impact.

  • The pace of change is high, and leaders need space to step back, reflect and work more strategically rather than reactively.

  • The team wants to become more resilient, learning to manage pressure, maintain wellbeing and stay grounded during periods of uncertainty.

We can support your teams through workshops, strategy development sessions and ongoing coaching and training.

Why Defining Team Coaching Matters

Because team coaching is relatively new, you’ll find different definitions depending on which academic or practitioner you speak to. Understanding these perspectives helps explain where the thinking has come from and how the practice continues to evolve.

Academic and Professional Definitions

Hackman & Wageman (2005) define team coaching as:

“Direct interaction with a team intended to help members make co‑ordinated and task‑appropriate use of their collective resources in accomplishing the team’s work.”

Clutterbuck (2011) describes it as:

“Helping the team improve performance, and the processes by which performance is achieved, through reflection and dialogue.”

Thornton (2016) frames it as:

“Coaching a team to achieve a common goal, paying attention to both individual performance and to group collaboration and performance.”

Feedback from Teams

Working with Neil, as both a management and wider team, enabled us to develop in a way we just couldn’t have done without him. The coaching he provided has really unlocked both team and individual capability and has been a hugely rewarding and positive experience.

Neil’s coaching was incredibly helpful when I needed to pull together a new management team and ensure they were really motivated towards achieving our organisation’s aims. I was able to clarify what I wanted and work through the best ways of achieving those goals with the team.

The team found your workshop incredibly valuable. You set yourself up as credible, knowledgeable and set a comfortable and easy tone throughout, creating a great space for shared learning. The content itself was to a high standard. Moreover, your interactivity throughout and capability with handling feedback, engagement, questions and commentary was deft and well received. We also loved the blend of engagement styles deployed throughout
